Installing the Bulkhead:
-
- Before
you start to level the BIOFALLS®, it is wise to install the
bulkhead fitting and PVC pipefitting.
- Install
the bulkhead fitting so that the rubber gasket is on the inside of
the container and the plastic gasket is on the outside, with the
threaded flange sticking out back of the BIOFALLS®. (Note:
BIOFALLS® Grande does not contain a plastic gasket).
- The
bulkhead fitting should be installed and tightened until the rubber
gasket on the inside of the BIOFALLS® begins to bulge outward. (Note:
Bulkheads are reverse threaded).
- Tighten
the adapter one to two complete turns past hand tight. Do not
over tighten bulkheads may crack.
- Use
Teflon thread or add a small bead of silicone to the threads of the
PVC pipe fitting to ensure a watertight seal. Then screw the pipe
fitting into the bulkhead.
Setting and Leveling BIOFALLS®:
- In order to avoid creating a "volcanic
look", do not set the BIOFALLS® too high. It normally sits
into the ground a few inches so that you create the perception that
Mother Nature herself has installed the waterfalls.
- To
avoid uneven settling, compact the area beneath the BIOFALLS® with
a hand tamper.
- With a two-foot level check the level of the BIOFALLS®.
Your BIOFALLS® should be level from side to side and tilt forward
approximately 1/4 of a bubble on the level.
Attaching Flexible PVC
Pipe:
- The filter is now ready for the flexible PVC to be
glued into place using PVC cement specified for use with flexible
piping.
- Prime the inside of the PVC fitting and also the
outside of the pipe where the flexible PVC cement will be applied.
- After
printing, apply the cement to the fitting and the PVC pipe and fit
the two pieces together.
- Hold
the pipe into the fitting for 60 seconds to allow the glue to
slightly set.
- Wait
10-15 minutes to let the glue completely set before you begin to
bury the BIOFALLS®.
- Before
you start to back fill around the BIOFALLS®, install the PVC
support tubes. Otherwise you may not be able to get them in place.
- We
also recommend having someone stand inside the BIOFALLS® to keep it
in place and level while it's being back filled.
- The
excavated soil from the pond can be backfilled around the sides and
back of the BIOFALLS® creating a berm. Hand-tamper the soil while
backfilling in order to reduce settling. Any additional soil can be
spread around the far side of the pond in order to create a planting
bed for perennials and annuals.
